Foster Care 101

Social services all over the world are the ones responsible for coming up with foster care programs. These programs allow children who are not able to live with their families, to live in safe homes and be provided with their basic needs such as food, education and shelter. Though the primary goal of foster care is to reunite the children with their original families, there are times when this is not possible. When this happens, these foster children will then be assigned to a more permanent arrangement with another foster care such as fostering in essex or become permanently adopted.

If you are interested in fostering but are not sure yet how to become a foster carer, you need to know that foster carers can care for foster children in many different ways. One is known as respite care, where the foster carers temporarily take care of foster children, often to provide some relief or rest to their primary caregivers. The arrangements can be made by both parties, known a respite arrangements and these are often times voluntary.  In emergency foster care, you become a foster care for children who need immediate assistance, usually because of safety reasons. Social services usually do not give advance notice because of the urgency of the situation, but they may provide some financial reimbursement to allow for costs associated with establishing a child in the home. Another type is known as short term care,  where you will need to act as a foster parent for the child for a period of weeks up to six months., after which the child gets reunited with their birth families or other relatives and in long term care, the child is placed under his or her foster carer’s care for a period longer than six months, especially if the child cannot return to his birth family and have no relatives to take care of him or her. This long term care only stops once a more permanent arrangement can be secured for the foster child, like adoption or if the child grows to adulthood and finally achieves independence.

The children who are being placed in foster care are just normal children who usually experienced unfortunate circumstances like death of the primary caregiver or some form of physical or sexual abuse or trauma. Children who may need foster care comes in all forms and ages from newborn babies who still need to be breastfed up to precarious and rebellious teenagers, the oldest, usually about seventeen years of age. They can come from all sorts of backgrounds as well. Although foster carers such as fostering in london can indicate on their application forms any preference for a foster child like age, gender, race or religious background, this does not give them a hundred percent assurance that it will be accommodated. It is also expected that foster carers commit to the responsibility and have infinite amounts of patience because bringing up foster children can become a very daunting task. These children have not been in the best of situations and often times, they will have a hard time expressing and communicating how they feel because of the trauma they experienced.

A Foster Carer’s Journey

Parents with Child

I am twenty five years old and I am single. I live in a two bedroom apartment alone and I work as Pediatrics Unit nurse in one of the tertiary hospitals in London. Working as a Pediatric Unit and Neonatal unit (for newborn babies) nurse have made me work closely with infants and children. I have always loved children and taking care of children ever since I was a kid myself. Even if I don’t have kids of my own and not yet considering having one any time soon, my friends and family tell me I have an innate maternal instinct. And I agree with them. Taking care of children is like second nature to me. And because of this, I have decided to learn how to foster a child.

I though fostering in London would be an easy breezy task but it’s not. My journey started with going online and searching for foster agencies. I finally found one and made contact with them. They then sent a social worker to my apartment to conduct an initial interview. One of the first questions that the social worker asked was why I wanted to become a foster care when I was only twenty five. “Shouldn’t you be going out to party and get drunk while you still can every night?”, she joked. I smiled. I told her I already did all the partying I could get on my hand when I was in college and those days were behind me. I also told her that since I was living alone and that I have an extra bedroom, I might as well put it to good use. I answered the rest of her questions and it seems like I was definitely qualified to become a foster carer. There was only one major hurdle. Since I was living alone and I have a full time job, I can’t proceed because a foster child needs to have at least one foster care always available to him or her at all times. The social worker told me about my options. I can proceed if I get a part time job or not work at all.

Since it was really my goal to become a foster carer before the year ended, I decided to look for another job. And Lady Luck seemed to have her eyes and ears on me at the time. I started looking for jobs online and then I came across a clinical nurse job opening with one of the insurance companies, which I thought was best for me – I would be able to work from home! It was so perfect and so I applied right away and to make the long story short, I got accepted. So I called the social worker again, informed them of my new working status and proceeded to continue my application. In one month, I got approved and in another month, I received a call from the foster agency that a 4 year old girl is in need of a foster carer.

That was the start of my journey to the fostering world. It was not easy, but the rewards outweighed the challenges. And now, I wouldn’t want to trade my life as a foster carer for anything else.

Want to adopt a child? Interested in getting someone to cuddle with? Apply to become a foster carer. But before everything else knows what are the types of fostering agencies that you might face, before adopting a child to complete your home.

These are the three types of fostering agencies such as fostering agencies in kent that will help you get an idea of adopting a child to complete a family.

Local Authority – from the word local this foster agency is from the local authorities. In some way they are going to sub-contract the independent fostering agency to provide every child in his or her own family. They also have charities and place for the children, live while no one yet needs a child. This kind of foster agency provides children and nice place to live, let them go to school to learn day by day like any other children do and they will also teach them some things that will help them in the near future.

Voluntary – this type of foster agency provides children, their needs just like any other foster agency that gives shelter, food and necessity for the children. They also have large charities for children and different organization that helps them keep up their help for those children who do not have any family. They help children by finding them a family to take care of them and they will also take care of.  But they are crossing to the local authority.

Independent Agency – mostly this foster agency is run for some purposes such as profit making for companies that wants to help children who don’t have any loved ones. They are the companies who are independent enough to work for profit and help other people or children by making a way to earn money. It is also like when the owner of a company creates his or her charity to provide help to other people, but in these terms they are providing shelter, food and care for the children who doesn’t have any family. They basically cater their help for the children.

Many children have lost their family in different reasons and getting them a shelter to live gives them another day to start. The fostering agencies help them live without worries, let them go to school to learn and provide them food in their daily living. By the time that someone wants to raise a child in their family, they can be the best substitute to give them the love and the care that they need. They will be able to live a life like any ordinary children who wants to have a complete family and a place to live. Some people want to be a carrier of foster child because they are not ready to have a child yet, but want to raise one, or the couple unfortunately can not make a child because of their partner health reasons, or simply one just don’t want to get pregnant yet, but they love to have a child that will take care of them and they will be taken care of when they grow old in return.
